"This is a well-edited, interesting, and intelligent guide for students in the social sciences. The book′s strengths include the effective way in which the contributors use flowcharts, inserts, and examples of students′ research; the consistently high quality of the writing; and the almost seamless integration across chapters." -- S. Halling * Choice *

This book has many strengths. It provides a good overview of the theoretical background and key issues involved in doing a qualitative project, but more importantly there is a plethora of very useful, clearly written and accessible practical advice, as well as case studies... This is an essential book to read before embarking on one’s first qualitative project.

-- Aspasia E. Paltoglou * The British Psychological Society QMiP Bulletin - Issue 29 *
A very essential and well written book for students on both BA and MA level doing a qualitative research project. It gives very practical advice and was well received by my students. -- Dr Carolin Demuth * drupal *
An excellent, comprehensive book that clearly navigates students through the stages of their qualitative research project. -- Dr Caroline Wesson * drupal *
A very useful text for undergraduates and MSc students which leads the student through each stage of the process of completing a qualitative research project -- Dr Deborah Chinn * drupal *
Adopted as essential reading for anyone undertaking qualitative inquiry. The book contains 11 chapters that walk the reader through the process of doing a qualitative research project. The topics that are covered range from developing a research question; planning the project and ethical considerations; how to manage the project; conducting the literature review; gathering data; data analysis; evaluating the project; and the process of writing up the project. The text is extremely useful for students new to qualitative research and for experienced researchers. -- Dr Gary McKenna * drupal *
Useful for all students, but particularly those using qualitative research methods for their final year dissertation -- Dr Julia Robertson * drupal *
I will be recommending this book to any of my students who decide to undertake a qualitative research project -- Dr Julie Prescott * drupal *
This is a really accessible and practical guide to conducting qualitative research. We used this book as core reading for a research methods course in the 2018-19 academic year and are up-dating to use the next edition of this book for 2019-20. -- Dr Kirsten Bartlett * drupal *
A very useful text, pitched perfectly for undergraduate students conducting a qualitative research project. It takes the student through from identifying a research question to evaluating their data. -- Dr Laura Soulsby * drupal *
I felt that whilst the content is helpful, it perhaps does not meet our postgrad students′ needs as well as a number of other more comprehensive - and so often longer - texts.

However, I do agree that it is likely to be a good source of guidance early on in the qualitiative journey. -- Dr Richard Parker * drupal *
Extremely useful for my dissertation students, though this isn′t attached to a particular class. I do recommend it, however, to any students who are doing a dissertation using qualitative methods. -- Dr Sally Wiggins * drupal *
A good introductory text, especially for those new to qualitative methods. The text and arrangement of material is very clear. The broad-based approach helps students to decide on the most appropriate approach to their research question. Overall, a really nice book! -- Dr Sunjeev Kamboj * drupal *
This is a really useful introductory textbook aimed primarily at undergraduates undertaking their own research projects. However, it is pitched at a level that is just right for postgraduates with little or no previous experience of qualitative research who are embarking on research as part of taught courses. What is particularly nice about the book is that it is practically oriented, going through each of the key stages of designing and conducting a research project, helping to demystify some of the processes that tend not to be well-covered in methods textbooks, such as coming up with a research question, ethics, evaluating research and writing up research projects. I will definitely be recommending this book to the trainee clinical psychologists I teach as I feel that it will help to take some of the fear out of the research process. -- Dr Suzanne Hodge * drupal *
See feedback already supplied on this book -- Dr Timothy Auburn * drupal *
Very useful book and I recommend it highly to our students. I cannot insist on adoption as we have an e-book deal with another publisher which provides all our students with texts, one of which is on qualitative methods in psychology.

This book covers all the essential detail and is presented very well with the range of boxed material. It is also very clearly written and would cater for a range of levels. -- Dr Timothy Auburn * drupal *
A very useful text. Clear and comprehensive. This is much needed. There are many other texts on research methods, but few on conducting and writing up student projects using qualitative methods. -- Helen Gregory * drupal *
Great overview, methodological kite easy to explain -- Mr Olivier Fuchs * drupal *
This basic but comprehensive introduction offers students an almost handbook experience that will prove very useful in moments of doubt. -- Mr William Spence * drupal *
Most of my psychology dissertation students do qualitative research and this is invaluable -- Mrs Karen McInnes * drupal *
Clearly structured and compactly written. Perfect also for novices. -- Ms Elizabeth San Miguel * drupal *
This is a very good book that can be used by undergraduates and postgraduates. It′s written in an accessible and clear way. The chapter on evaluating qualitative research is particularly useful. -- Ms Jenna Condie * drupal *
This is a clearly written well structured book that can guide students on the research journey. Specifically I found the chapters that develop critical thinking in the student with regard to their own work and the work of others very helpful as a starting point. -- Ms Jo Cruywagen * drupal *
This book is perfect for our module as it covers the whole process students need to think through for their projects. -- Ms Liz Cunningham * drupal *
This is an excellent textbook which any student embarking on a qualitative research project would be foolish not to purchase! It fills a gap in the market and is very informative and easy to read. It will certainly make my project supervision easier!
-- Ms Margaret Watkin * drupal *
