As health policy at a national level has ever increasing impact on local health services, it is essential that public health students understand how the development and implementation of policy and strategy provide the framework for improving quality, innovation, productivity and prevention in the delivery of healthcare.
The book is divided into two sections, with section one covering a strategic overview of national policies, and section two giving specific local implementation of policy examples to support section one. Case studies and examples will help the reader to understand the policy and strategy and to apply them to their local setting.
Like: Relevance to current workforce needs. Dislike: nothing. -- Aldo Mussi * drupal *
A useful book with UK focus. Clear layout-thought provoking case studies and activities. -- Anneyce Knight * drupal *
The book is very well organised according to the competences for Public Health Practitioners which are at the core of the Nutrition Society competences for registered Public Health Nutritionist, then the book is very suitable to map the career framework. I personally found chapter 11 very suitable as an example for public health nutrition.
Just to clarify the programme in the menu doesn′t fit into what I teach, we have a Masters in Human Nutrition with specialization in Public Health Nutrition. -- Dr Ada Garcia * drupal *
I think the linkage between the occupational standards and levels within the standards relaly assist the reader/practitioner. This is the only place I can find where this linkage is made between learning and examples of practice and the competency frameworks.
We will be using it on B.Sc. Env Health, B.Sc. Environmental and Public Health M.Sc. Environmental Health and M.Sc. Applied Public Health.
If I am honest some of the pagination set up ie boxed on more than one page make it more difficult for someone like me to read. -- Dr Alan Page * drupal *
Layout - really accessible and the links to competencies are excellent. Many books attempting to cover this area are very difficult to navigate. Examples - reinforce and consolidate learning and ensure content does not remain in the abstract. -- Dr Clare Davenport * drupal *
This is a very well laid out and accessible book which uses clear examples to engage the reader. The format works very well to direct students to apply their learning and reflect on different case studies from a broad range of areas and settings with an emphasis on the strategic context of policy . The combination of highlighted chapter overviews, activities and summaries contributes to a user friendly format. -- Dr Dawne Gurbutt * drupal *
This is a very useful introductory text. It is particularly valuable for international students who often struggle to understand the UK ′system′ in a very short space of time.
Another very good point is the coverage of all parts of the UK. Often it is necessary in Wales to add on a ′Welsh dimension′ which is getting more onerous as countries diverge. -- Dr Gillian Olumide * drupal *
This book is very UK focused and many of my students are from overseas, so it can′t be a recommended text. However, I like the way it references the professional course curricula, which makes it particularly useful and usable for students on those courses. -- Dr Jennifer Gosling * drupal *
A very nice book, well structured, clear and a useful aid to student′s learning. I particularly liked the chapter on what policy is and how it is made. It is not quite the book that I was hoping for as required reading for my course but I am likely to dip in and out of it regularly and will be recommending it to my colleagues. -- Dr Jonathan Ives * drupal *
Excellent text with good chapters on policy and strategy - very pertinent for health and social care students.
The chapters are supported with good diagrams, theory and models and relevant examples from health and social care sector -- Dr Julie Prowse * drupal *
This is a very useful book as it explores both policy and strategy and how these interlink. Although there are many texts on the market that cover these two areas– few bring them together. The book was written for health care practitioners and is therefore ideal for the module I run. The examples are pertinent and the use of additional reading and actvities complement the topics covered. \
I am using this book on an MSc in Leadership, Management and Change in health and Social Care -- Dr Julie Prowse * drupal *
Excellent book on policing and policy development skills within public health field. -- Dr Krishna Regmi * drupal *
Like the case studies and the activity- useful for class activities. I also like the layout and formatting of the books. -- Dr M Hurley * drupal *
I think the book is easy to navigate and some useful activities. -- Dr Margaret Coffey * drupal *
Clear presentation of the current policies and strategies for improving Health and Wellbeing, underpinned by Dott white papers. Which supports the Health Psycology Training at UWE. The Boxes of Activities and Case Studies are very useful to students enabling them to reflect on this material and see application of policies into practice. -- Dr Marianne Morris * drupal *
I liked the clarity and focus of each chapter with regard to the PH competency framework at different levels. The range of topics included in examples and in case studies adds to the appeal of the book for students, as it addresses a diversity of interests. There is a useful mix of activities, with comments, to encourage personal learning and student reflection. Case studies encourage further learning and application. Consider chapters 4 & 5 to be particularly relevant and will recommend them to students.
Course is part of BSc in Health Studies (not MSc) but not give an option to enter a different programme title. -- Dr Moira Maconachie * drupal *
A timely and accessible overview of contemporary UK policies in the wealth arena. It risks becoming out dated quickly but is a very good starter text for students arriving to engage with the complex field. -- Dr Nick De Viggiani * drupal *
An insightful book. -- Dr Obrey Alexis * drupal *
The structure and content is excellent. The clear link to competencies makes it highly relevant for vocational programmes.
Please note I am a chapter author, so am not unbiased(!)
Our programme is Public Health Nutrition. -- Dr Penelope Nestel * drupal *
This is a very well planned and clearly written book, which really tries to get to grips with making sense of the policy-forming process for public health and related practitioners, and explores this in the context of the skills and competencites required to engage in public health work. -- Dr Peter Duncan * drupal *
Chapters 1,2, 4 and 5 provide a good introduction to policy. Chapters 8, 11 and 12 provide useful case studies. While this book is not suitable for the postgraduate modules I lead on, I would recommend having this in the library as a reference text for modules on Health Promotion, Public Health and Public Health Policy. -- Dr Puja Myles * drupal *
This is a very good book because it places the competences for Public Health from the P.H skills and careers framework in each chapter. Brilliant idea, easy for teachers in the UK and for students. Probably will be out of date with NHS restructuring! -- Dr Silvana Bettiol * drupal *
Excellent book, both on a theoretical and practical level. -- Dr Vincent La Placa * drupal *
Too public health orientated. I was looking for wellbeing in the workplace related books, rather than government strategy specifically. -- Fiona Fuller * drupal *
It is very topical (although it also risks becoming outdated soon)and uses case studies and topics familiar to our students. The format is very varied and user friendly, with lots of activities and recaps of key policy documents etc. Each chapter signals its contribution to the public health skills and competencies framework, so is useful for professional development. The first chpaters provide a very good overview of the role of policy in health promotion and public health, and there is also acknowledgement and explanation of the UK′s position (embracing 4 distinct countries). Overall a very comprehensive and useful text. -- Jennie Naidoo * drupal *
I am particularly pleased to see a chapter on housing, health and wellbeing (and by such distinguished authors) as this is so frequently left out of public health and wellbeing books. This chapter for me in particular makes the book of particular interest over and above many similar titles. -- Jill Stewart * drupal *
I like the layout, the exercises and case studies and it is very clear. I have leant it to a colleague and his first impressions were very positive. -- Jo Skinner * drupal *
The book is laid out in a logical manner which aids navigation. The use of activities is of great benefit when lesson planning. The links to the public health competancies is excellent this clearly demonstrates the level which students should be achieving. -- Kirsty Mason * drupal *
I found it an interesting text and would see it as useful for public health students at masters level. I am however not currently teaching a module at that level but will pass it to a colleague with the recommendation that it is used. -- Mary Northrop * drupal *
This is a very practical text that is incredibly useful for drawing links with professional contexts -- Matthew Jones * drupal *
Like clear writing, overviews and breadth. -- Miss Alex Stewart * drupal *
An informative book which explores contemporary policies and strategies within the UK. An array of social determinants such as poverty, housing and substance misuse are considered which are very relevant in current society. -- Miss Parvonay Amirkhani * drupal *
I really like this text. I particularly like the chapters on: (1) Social Determinants of Health - Housing: A UK Perspective; (2) Social Determinants of Health - Child Poverty: A Northern Ireland Perspective; and (3) Policy: What is it? How Is It made?. All these chapters are important in my module on public health policy and practice. -- Mr Christopher Owens * drupal *
I found the book well presented, well informed and relevant to the topic area and accessible to a range of postgraduate students in the field. The authorship list is impressive although perhaps too heavily weighted in favour of academic public health; perhaps it would be of value to include more practitioners in order to explore the application of theory around policy development and practice. Any such application required a good foundation and this text certainly has that. The scope and coverage of the book is engaging and meaningful. Links to public health competencies will aid students. The use of activities and illustrations aid learning and understanding of concepts. -- Mr Ian Llewellyn-Nash * drupal *
A useful text with clear chapters and useful casestudies to highlight key points throughout. -- Mr Ranjit Khutan * drupal *
The case studies and activities help to contextualize the chapter content. This is particularly important for 1st year students on a topic that can be perceived as quite dry. -- Mr Scott Macpherson * drupal *
Clearly written by people who know their subject, the teaching of it and their students, I will use this book to cover health plicy with Masters′ public health students. I like the links to current policy, ideas for teachers and practical examples. The internaitonl perspective does nto form a focus of the text and achieving the best balance of UK / international is a challenge for my teaching. -- Mr William Spence * drupal *
I′m also going to draw this book to students attention on other modules because of the developing a strategy for implementing policy chapter. This is so relevant to current healthcare practice. -- Mrs Anne Fenech * drupal *

Useful text to support health promotion module. -- Mrs Debbie Wisby * drupal *
This is a good print in contemporary public health policy and practice. I particularly liked the chapter on political and ideological context of policy - a very much neglected area of public health education and training. -- Mrs Flora Douglas * drupal *
Included on reading list -- Mrs Frances Wilson * drupal *
I like the close reflection of the public health career framework competences. Very helpful to the learner and developing portfolio. -- Mrs Jane Thomas * drupal *

I have used the book to prepare teaching sessions and it was added to the Students reading list -- Mrs Nicola Lilley * drupal *
Initially, the structure of the book, outlining the PH competences, was a little offputting for a reader not looking specifically to work towards these. However, looking past the numerical labels, the summary of content by chapter was a useful aid to identifying the content of the different sections. On reading through, the chapters are written with clarity and the exercises are relevent and pertinent, and will be useful to consider during lectures. The currency of the book and supporting reading is also relevent.
Finally, the options for Programme are too limited on this form. The MSc I am recommending the book for is MSc in Health and Wellbeing. -- Mrs Nina Quinlan * drupal *
Extremely well structured with clear indications of where and to what level it meets the core competencies of the PH cored framework. Clear activities which are likely to support the relective dialogue, critical analysis and evaluation. -- Mrs Sue Everett * drupal *

An excellent resource that covers a range of examinations of health and wellbeing policy across the four home nations of the UK.
The breadth of information includes an extensive exploration of how policy and strategy is created and how health and wellbeing is expressed through it.
A good book that introduces policy and strategy and compares and contrasts across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. -- Ms GILLIAN WAKEMAN * drupal *
