Thinking Through Pedagogy for Primary and Early Years cover

This practical, accessible book encourages a deep, often challenging, consideration of how young children learn and how teachers and other adults best support their learning. Essential reading for education students, it draws on research and practice to help readers reflect critically on their beliefs and practice. After comparing different views of pedagogy, it explores children′s development and the importance of culture and context, emphasising the attributes of successful learners, relationships and the learning environment. Readers are helped think through how different aspects of pedagogy are interlinked and consider the implications for breadth, balance, planning and assessment and continuing professional development.

Comprehensive, thought provoking yet accessible. This book is a gem and one that I shall be drawing to students attention immediately. It′s critical thinking activities and following comments should gently guide students to the processing of skills so much in demand. I look forward to more of the same calibre in this series
Lecturer, Bridgwater College

Theory into practice approach is most valuable for undergraduate students attempting to improve their reflection skills. -- Dorothy McMillan * drupal *
Both thoughtful and thought provoking! This is an engaging and accessible read which will support and extend our students′ understanding of pedagogy. The criticial thinking activities challenge the reader and will encourage our students to reflect critically. A really welcome addition to our reading list. -- Jane Hart * drupal *
An excellent book although pitched a little higher than makes it suitable for the Level 3 Early Years Educators that I originally hoped to use it with. Neithertheless, I will recommend this interesting book to my Level 5 students instead. -- Lynette Morris * drupal *
A very insightful book for the learners who are undertaking the Primary Education module. -- Miss Annette Trilk * drupal *
I enjoyed the book and I will be recommending it at the Hull EYP network meeting for qualified EYPs, but not as yet to students on the programme. -- Miss Laura Harkin * drupal *
Considers how & why we learn the way we do. Fits in with our curriculum and core subjects very well! -- Miss Lisa Johnson * drupal *
An interesting book. I recommended it to some students as felt it would be useful for their dissertation project. -- Miss Louise Kay * drupal *
A book rich in ideas and exploration that repays careful re-reading. -- Mr Keith Savage * drupal *
The content is covered in other course books.
The ′contents′ page does not do justice to the work in the chapters however as most students start at this point, they would not feel the need to engage beyond the ′contents′ page. Perhaps you may consider a short (one sentence / key word) introduction into each so that the reader is assisted in their engagement. -- Mr Mark-Andrew Dearden * drupal *
Like- The chapter focus and critical thinking exercises. Further reading at end of each chapter is a good idea. Dislikes-links to English curriculum was evident but would like to see a wider context, i.e. Welsh. -- Mrs Amanda Thomas * drupal *
This excellent book will support the challenges embedded in the module; why do we have schools, what is learning, what should children know, etc. I dislike the tendency to pad out texts with text boxes of all kinds; it undermines the need for learners to find out what they will learn by reading the text. -- Mrs Christine Hey * drupal *
This text has been a useful source for students to consider different roles and areas of educational experiences for young children in primary and early years settings..
Post graduate students who are considering teacher training will find this useful. The case studies and critical thinking and key ideas sections enable links with theory and application to practice. Relevant and contemporary further reading to challenge their own learning and level. -- Mrs Estelle Martin * drupal *
I like the case studies and the exercises. Further reading is useful. -- Mrs Penny Farrelly * drupal *
a strong text - excellent detail - will be promoted and purchased for library. Some new ideas here, great stimulus for classroom discussion. -- Mrs Sarah Barton * drupal *
Thorough, accessible text. Frequent relevant prompts for learners. Brilliant first book on pedagogy. -- Mrs Su Lowe * drupal *
Well received by students doing a BA in Early Childhood Studies. The book came very valuable when preparing their assignments. -- Mrs Svetlana Shivacheva * drupal *
This is a useful text for providing background reading. I also used some of the exercises with students. They enjoyed using them. -- Mrs Zenna Kingdon * drupal *
useful as a supplementary text to complement other texts on pedagogy -- Ms Babs Anderson * drupal *
Will be useful general background reading. -- Ms Barbara Allebone * drupal *
This book was most interesting to early childhood students who wanted to progres to early years teaching or those extending reading around provision of learning through play -- Ms Carol Lloyd * drupal *
This is a good text that supports student′s understanding of key issues and theories within the subject area. This text has been useful across several modules due to its comprehensive coverage. -- Ms Clare Harris * drupal *
Like: the critical thinking exercises, key ideas, presentation. -- Sally Newton * drupal *
A good level text to engage and develop students knowledge in relation to pedagogy appropriate to Primary and EYFS teaching/learning episodes. -- Sarah Charles * drupal *
Added to book list. -- Sue Miles-Pearson * drupal *
