This accessible introductory text addresses the core knowledge domain of research methods. It provides concise coverage of the central concepts, techniques, problems and debates in this key area, while encouraging a critical approach and developing students′ higher level skills.
Activities help readers build the underpinning generic critical thinking and transferable skills they need in order to become independent learners, and to meet the relevant requirements of their programme of study.
The text provides core information on designing psychology research studies with key chapters on both quantitative and qualitative designs. Other chapters look at ethics, common problems, and advances and innovations.
The activites and critical thinking questions are really useful to use in my lectures or as seminar activities. -- Becky House * drupal *
Complete, accessible, very well structured -- Dr Alessandra Fasulo * drupal *
The book is well structured and written in an accessible style. I particularly liked the practical examples and activities. -- Dr Andrew Watt * drupal *
An excellent textbook for those new and old to resaerch methods and covers both quantitative and qualitative methods. -- Dr Anne Manyande * drupal *
Thank you for the text. I really like it, but I′m not responsible for the book choice on the res meths/stats units. -- Dr Carolyn Mair * drupal *
What a perfect text book for level 4? Absolutely what i was looking for. -- Dr Christine Campbell * drupal *
Although I am no longer teaching on the Applied Research Methods unit, I have suggested to the current unit leader that this book be recommended to students who are returning to the postgraduate units who may have been out of academia for a while or not confident in research methods/stats. It is very comprehensible and great for building confidence. -- Dr Claire Hart * drupal *
The book is written in a clear and accessible style. The end of chapters activities are a strength - they encourage reflection, evaluation and analysis. The inclusion of further reading is also a strength. Structure / organisation / presentation is clear and coherent. The use of case studies enable students to ′ground′ the theory. -- Dr Dawn Male * drupal *
This was a good book. I enjoyed the summary tasks what you have learned. More colour will attract more students and make it more interactive. -- Dr Dimitrios Tsivrikos * drupal *
Very easy to read, and simple enough to dip in and out of. Added to the list of possible books students may like to read as part of their studies. Not detailed enough for essential/core text for this course. -- Dr Emma Meaburn * drupal *
Yes, the text contains some good activities which will clarify aspects of the subjects. Well suited to first year students as supplementary reading for the Speech Pathology & Therapy and Psychology and Speech Pathology programmes. -- Dr Emma Turley * drupal *
It has very relevant chapters that map well onto our lectures. However, it′s not comprehensive enough to replace our core texts. -- Dr I-Chant Chiang * drupal *
Our existing texts had this material covered. -- Dr Jonathan Peirce * drupal *
Like: balance between qualitative and quantitative methods. Reference to mixed methods. Clear presentation. Common problems section. Dislike: Not distinguishing single subject experimental design from case studies. This section was too brief and potentially confusing. -- Dr Juliet Goldbart * drupal *
Useful guide for undergraduates. Covers the topic in an accessble way (students don′t get lost in terminology). -- Dr Laura Purdy * drupal *
Good general coverage of research methods and up to date framework on designing studies. More examples and case studies would have attracted more student interest. More illustrations needed to break up long sections of text. -- Dr Martin Campbell * drupal *
Not a suitable scholarly level for our students -- Dr Patrick Hylton * drupal *
I like the fact that it explains complex ideas in a simple way for students - this is ideal for first years who are just starting to engage with research methods and find it quite daunting. It wouldn′t be suitable for more advanced students because it doesn′t cover more complex designs and analysis, but it would be useful for students who are struggling to understand basic principles in research methods -- Dr Rachel Maunder * drupal *
As a qualitative researcher from Chapters 7 onwards this book is very useful for my students, however, it is unlikely I would use some of the earlier chapters. -- Dr Sal Watt * drupal *
Nothing wrong with the book - just have another book we are happier with. -- Dr Sarita Robinson * drupal *
Good layout, appropriate level of readability, realistic in scope and scale (from a students perspective) -- Helen Graham * drupal *
Accessible, nicely presented, good variety of learning features. -- Julia Robertson * drupal *
I have just received it - so have not had a lot of time to look at it and work within.
I think that I am going to put it as recommended reading for all of my students as I feel the exercises are really useful. However it would be helpful to have explanations of it all and then the exercises at the end of a chapter for example. I teach across four courses around social care and counselling and the average cohort is about 20 so I have quite a lot of students -- Miss Abbygail Shrubb * drupal *
Great resource for those new to research -- Miss Rachel East * drupal *
A thorough grounding in the key areas of research design and the application of various research methods. well structured and very easy to follow. A good text for social work students to see the range of methods and how they can be used. -- Mr Iain Campbell-King * drupal *
The layout is not what I view as accessible. The black text is offputting, and it is difficult to jump in under one section to get a recap on that one bit, some of the wording I also find would confuse the less confident students. I don′t see it as a resuly, as something useful for struggling students, and it is too simplistic in places for my more advanced students. -- Mrs Stella Williams * drupal *
A powerpack for starting researchers. Really informative introductions to a couple of different resarch designs and into data analysis. -- Ms Elizabeth San Miguel * drupal *
This is a great starting point for students who want a clear and basic introduction to \\research methods. Each chapter takes you through an understanding of the various components you will need to consider in a Undergraduate Reseach project. -- Ms Jo Cruywagen * drupal *
Brilliant to have this compact version next to e.g. Andy Field. It does allow autonomy for students to work by themselves and check their understanding without feeling overwhelmed, i.e. like a safety net which provides confidence to tackle more complex issues. -- Ms Lieslotte Van Leeuwen * drupal *
It covers the essentials of research methods comprehensively and with a good style for students. -- Professor Edward Melhuish * drupal *
Thanks. Very interesting overview with good examples. -- Professor Ewald Mittelstaedt * drupal *
I don′t think it works as a text to enthuse students about research methods or particularly as a stand-alone introduction to the topic. I say that partly because the writing in the introduction in particular is rather dry. But I do think it would work well if you had already studied research methods and wanted to test your understanding by doing the ′skills builder′ activities, which are very good. -- Professor Jackie Andrade * drupal *
