"This book encourages readers to reflect on the nature and values of health care practice through its challenging but accessible style. It will be a stimulating and thought-provoking read for anyone involved in day-to-day health care." - Professor Jane Wills, London South Bank University
"[This book] offers frameworks and guidance that all health care workers will find stimulating and challenging and that all of them will benefit by considering." - Professor Linda Jones, Open University
Why is thinking about values and ethics a crucial component of health care training and practice? How can we go about engaging in such thinking?
Values, Ethics and Health Care responds to these essential questions. It examines key ethical frameworks and debates within the field of healthcare, locating them firmly in their social and occupational contexts. Guiding students through a range of dilemmas and difficulties encountered in health care practice with case studies and real-life examples, this lively text illustrates how to apply knowledge to professional practice and decision-making.
Key features of the book:
- Offers a critical and reflective understanding of health care ethics and values
- Presents an interprofessional approach
- Relates theory to ′everyday′ ethics
- Includes student-friendly features such as real-life examples, ′thinking about′ points and links to further reading.
The book will be essential reading for undergraduates taking modules in Values, Ethics and Professional Practice as part of health studies degree programmes. It will also be useful for postgraduates as well as practitioners in the field.
This is a good book, but other texts provide a broader perspective for our current first years. We are changing the syllabus and the book may well be better used when we move vaules and ethics teaching across three years of teaching -- Dr Anita Sargeant * drupal *
A very well organised text that covers all essential areas at a basic level. Usefull text for 1st year students. -- Dr Christopher Biela * drupal *
This book gives the undergraduate students a solid foundation for further studies in Healthcare Ethics. -- Dr S. Alexander Riley * drupal *
This text provides an excellent overview on how research and the values of the researcher intertwine with ethics. It is an easy to read text that accomplishes what it set out. -- Dr William Evans * drupal *
Very useful book. I will use the examples and scenarios for the students to discuss in class.
It is also clear enough to be useful for them to read in preparation for class. -- Jayne Crow * drupal *
This is a very useful resource, I particularly like the fact that it provides more than just a descriptive outline of the issues. The author encourages the student to learn to critically evaluate the relevant issues by identifying problems with specific concepts. -- Linda Wood * drupal *
A good sound text with a llikable layout and content relevant to present clinical activity. -- Miss Carmel Parker * drupal *
This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning more about health and social care values. What I enjoyed about the book is the case examples used throughout to demonstrate how values can be applied in real settings. Some emphasis on ethical challenges faced by health care providers. Useful for a range of readers including A levels, undergraduate and post graduate students. -- Miss Caroline Mckeever * drupal *
Helpful book for students to be able to gain some understanding of ethical issues in healthcare. Accessible and not too detailed so good for students who may struggle with a lot of reading. -- Miss Charlotte Anne Clark * drupal *
Highly recommended and have placed on reading lists as essential readings. If you are looking for an introductory text that begins to introduce Values in a very simply but effective way with great examples then I would highly recommended this text for students. -- Miss Nevin Mehmet * drupal *

I was really pleased to receive this textbook as I believe it has filled a gap in this area. To have a book which addresses the topics of values and ethics from an interprofessional perspective is ideal for my course which is taught to a wide range of professional and non-professional health care students. I particularly like the wide range of examples used with the questions which help bring the topic to life.
My one very minor gripe is where some sections are in a lighter type (eg see page 84 and Summary on page 85-86) which is difficult to read.
Otherwise this will become an essential text for my unit. Thank you. -- Mr Ian Donaldson * drupal *
A very useful & accessible resource for health and social care students on pre & post registration programs. The book encourages a deep approach to thinking & learning on ethical issues. -- Mr Ian Hamilton * drupal *
This is an easily read, comprehensive book which complements the teaching of Health/research ethics -- Mr Meryl Dimmock * drupal *
This book provides students with a good background on the ethical issues associated with healthcare provision. I had origionally considered this book for a final year undergraduate module in which students are required to apply for ethical approval for their own research. However, the content is more suited to a module on evidence based heathcare as it provides good information on the ethical issues around decision making in health care. -- Mr Paul Watts * drupal *
Values and ethics texts are often hard going, not so this delightful, one by Peter Duncan. The use of case studies and his notion of ′ordinary′ health care enable him to deliver a readable and accessible book with many layers. This then will take the reader into careful and reflective thinking and discourse that they might otherwise not have considered. -- Mr Timothy Wallis * drupal *
Excellent book to explore different values and ethics in social care. -- Mr Tyrone Perry-Harry * drupal *
I like this book because it provides food for thought in that in makes claims, asks you questions, provides examples and will provide stimulus for the reflective process. -- Mrs Deborah Hibbard * drupal *
This book covers the subject of ethics very well -- Mrs Joanne Currid * drupal *
An easy to access book, which uses different examples to ′make the point′ . Some excellent questions and examples are used throughout the book to encourage deeper understanding of what can be difficult topics for students to grasp. Well done. -- Mrs Kerry Welch * drupal *
A non threatening approach to some complex issues. Students are often intimidated by the concept of ethics in relation to understanding its context in health care. This book is informative and concise. -- Mrs Kerry Welch * drupal *
In Values, Ethics and Health Care the authors have provided students with an accesible and managable introduction to the subject, allowing them the opportunity to develop essential knowledge and skills which are crucial for their academic and vocational development. -- Mrs Lynne Bedson * drupal *
Recommended as library stock. particularly useful for students who are focusing upon this topic as a dissertation or long study. Easy to read, well organised and covers contemporary material. -- Mrs Melanie Fisher * drupal *
Excellent book. I can use this also on my Health Promotion course.

It is a suitable text for all levels of student and experience and is relevant to all aspects of care in the hospital and community setting -- Ms Joanne O'Donnell * drupal *
A really good book, well written and well structured. The ′Practice Examples′ and ′Key Points′ in each section make this easy to follow and understand.
There is plenty of additional reading as well relevant to each topic. -- Ms Julie Burton * drupal *
A bit demanding for our students, I expected more concrete information. -- Ms Marita Salmu * drupal *
Although the book is embedded in cultural context it provides th reader with essential information on ethical aspects of health care that are universal.
