This text provides foundational methods for generalist practice in social work, focusing on enhancing clients' social functioning and addressing social justice, particularly for historically oppressed individuals and families. It's aimed at BSW and MSW students.
Foundations of Interpersonal Practice in Social Work provides a comprehensive overview of fundamental generalist practice methods that highlight the shared elements involved in working with individuals, families, and groups. The text adopts a broad approach, aiming to equip social work students with the skills necessary to improve their clients' social functioning. By fostering a deeper understanding of social issues, the authors guide students in effectively addressing and resolving the challenges their clients face.
A significant focus of the book is on promoting social justice, particularly for individuals and families who have experienced historical oppression. The authors emphasize the importance of recognizing systemic inequalities and encourage students to adopt practices that advocate for marginalized populations. This commitment to social justice is woven throughout the text, reinforcing the ethical responsibilities of social workers in their practice.
Additionally, this edition incorporates up-to-date information aligned with the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) latest Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). This ensures that students are learning current best practices and standards in the field. The book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in introductory Direct Practice and Generalist Practice courses within BSW and MSW programs, making it a valuable resource for those preparing to enter the social work profession.
I love the flow of the book and the ease of moving students through the engagment process to the evaluation process! -- Dr Margaret Counts-Spriggs * drupal *
There are some applicable chapters to courses, however, not enough to have students buy the book. We are redesigning the course completely from scratch and will include more social/public health/communication topics in the course. Therefore, we will reconsider this book as a recommended text for the students at our medical school. -- Dr Tania Arana * drupal *
Some useful ideas and theories but overall the slant is towards American practice, whihc whilst still relevant does have its differnences from UK practice. However, some of the writing will be useful in teaching and learning about relationships within the SW setting and I will be citing it in my teaching. -- Mrs Kerry Fidler * drupal *
