Once again, the latest edition of the Handbook of Individual Therapy offers a masterful overview of the various approaches to ′healing the psyche′ which are available in Britain today. The Handbook puts the different therapeutic traditions in a cultural and historical context, and offers an up-to-date view of the nature of psychotherapy as it is currently practiced. Each chapter uses a standard format which offers the reader a clear pathway through the key issues, and the work is brought alive with in-depth case studies. The Handbook of Individual Therapy continues to be the book that one turns to when looking for a clear introduction to the broad range of talking cures that are  offered in the UK today. -- Dr Nick Midgley

Dryden and Reeves’ Handbook freshly maps the current status of psychotherapy in the UK. It is a compendium that can serve as an excellent reference point for an academic as well as practitioner. Its depth and breadth extend beyond UK borders and will be very much appreciated by an international reader. It is an exceptional achievement!

-- Ladislav Timulak

The publication of the 6th Edition builds on a pedigree going back 30 years to the appearance of the original edition in 1984. Through successive editions, this text has become a stalwart for practitioners, trainers, and students working in and researching the helping professions. It provides an invaluable and authoritative account of the rich diversity of individual therapy, including research and training, and reflects important recent developments and innovations in the theory and practice of individual therapy -- Michael Barkham
I have found this book very useful to offer my students an “enough deep” introduction to the most important approaches to psychological treatments. Although the book is framed the Britain context, the majority therapeutic models reviewed are also popular in Spain. I have appreciated the book puts every psychotherapeutic tradition in a cultural and historical context. Also, the fact that each chapter has the same structure allows an easy search of the critical themes and a useful way to make easier the comparisons between approaches. I have specially appreciated the inclusion of relatively new therapeutic approaches, like the covered by Part IV and Part V of the handbook, as well as the two chapters dedicated to “Professional Issues”. Finally, the case examples included in every chapter devoted to the therapeutic approaches offer a great illustration of the therapeutic process and outcomes. I definitely will include this book in the recommended readings of my Psychotherapy course. -- Dr Barbara Torres * drupal *
An indispensable text book for students of Guidance and Counselling. -- Dr Colin Cameron * drupal *
This book offers a sound review of many therapeutic modalities and philosophies. It is a useful book for postgraduate students who are studying to become therapists and I would recommend it as reading to such students. -- Dr Graham Du Plessis * drupal *
The handbook is rightly broad in its focus and provides a useful overview of various therapeutic models/approaches. There could be more detail on specific treatment techniques within individual therapeutic models with some therapist resources (e.g., worksheets where possible). This could potentially form part of an online resource for readers of the book. -- Dr Jason Spendelow * drupal *
An excellent resource for doctoral trainees. -- Dr Jessica McCarrick * drupal *
A good text covering the main theoretical traditions and approaches toward individual therapy. Good structure of each chapter with guide to assessment; goal setting; treatment; evaluation of each approach. A very useful tool that would transition with students from academic learning to practice. -- Dr Leanne Robins * drupal *
This is a superb text that introduces students to a wide range of therapeutic approaches. There are many elements that combine to enhance students′ learning, including the brief historical background, case studies to anchor the concepts and techniques, and critical appraisal of the approaches. -- Dr Sanjay Joban * drupal *

A really good easy to read and easy to reference book. Very informative for learners studying at level 3 and above in my opinion. Good to look for specific theories or read from cover to cover -- Elaine Squires * drupal *
An excellent book with relevance to those embarking on their initial counselling training as well as those studying at a more advanced academic level, as it offers clear introductory information about a range of therapies. -- Michelle Cooke * drupal *

Gives a clear, cogent overview of a range of therapies offered today, and I feel that this book could be suitable for pre and post registration students alike. There isn′t too much I can say about this book that hasn′t already been said. A masterwork of clarity and energy. Combining clear historical perspective with insight and in-depth reasoning, this work is motivatonal and informing whilst avoiding the ′cliches′ and over simplification of lesser works. -- Mr Peter Lyon * drupal *
