If social work students are to flourish in their careers, and go beyond a basic sense of ‘competence’ in practice, it is essential to develop a sense of Professional Self. This book will help students develop critical understanding of their own social work practice, and the tools and skills required to become a professional social worker.

It includes:

  • Chapters on practising Reflexivity and the importance of Relationshipsin social work
  • Contributions from leading social work academics
  • A focus on building a professional identity through learning and practice

The emphasis is on developing your professionalism, and how that  journey translates into everyday practice. To help this growth there are further chapters on getting the best from continuing professional development, challenging poor practice and professionalism and ethics.

Professor Jonathan Parker is Deputy Dean for Research and Enterprise and Director of the Centre for Social Work and Social Policy at Bournemouth University. He is currently conducting cross cultural research on learning and practice with colleagues in Southeast Asia.

Professor Mark Doel is Professort Emeritus in the Centre for Health and Social Care Research at Sheffiled Hallam University, and a registered social worker. Mark′s research experience is in the fields of practice education, social work practice methods, and service user involvement.

...Each chapter takes a particular aspect of the professional social work role and explains what the contributor feels in the best way to approach it. This gives a rounded and professional approach instead of a specific directed one. It therefore encourages the student to understand that each of us are able to find our own way of showing professionalism, and this is an ongoing process, one which we need to continue to develop. Overall, I found the book useful and thought-provoking.  -- Catrina Hall, Student Social Worker
A very useful text for the 3rd year module ′Building On Vocational Interests′ -- Dr Colin Cameron * drupal *
this is a book that engages students with the real challenges -- Judy Kerr * drupal *
This is an extremely useful text. It places social work within its current context, examining ethical dilemmas for the profession. I will be recommending this to all my tutees and for the students across the BA and MA programmes. -- Miss Helen Carr * drupal *
Excellent stuff! -- Mr Chris Yianni * drupal *
This excellent text introduces newly qualified workers to key professional issues from the perspective of highly respected authors in social work. -- Mr Dave Mason * drupal *

This book due to its clear language and structure will be recommended to my students as core reading from year 2 until the completion of their studies across a number of modules. The discussion points and follow up reading has proven helpful in engaging students in discussion and directing their own learning.

The book contains important messages about the emerging identity of social work students as professional social workers. I will recommend this book across a number of modules across all years of the social work programme at the University of the West of Scotland as a facilitator on the learning journey and as a helpful companion on the transition from student to professional worker. -- Mr John Sturgeon * drupal *
A useful addition for preparing students for first practice placement. -- Mr Luke Tibbits * drupal *
An interesting general text that may have some pointers for social work students -- Mr Michael Marriott * drupal *
A well written book that provides useful background reading but too much detail for the module I deliver to be essential reading -- Mr Peter Mounsey * drupal *
Good text for practitioners on CPD programmes. -- Mr Robert Banks * drupal *
This book is highly recommended and each chapter will appeal to any person interested in social work practice and theory looking for greater understanding on social work today.

Chapters 3,4 and 5 stood out for me, as White, Ruch and Thompson have been writers in social work that have always evoked thought and could be argued to be transformative in their thinking.

Chapters 7&11 provide good illustrations on ethics and the media and are relevant to practising social work today having to contend with the media and differences in views and perspectives on social work practice. Mark Doel and Jonathan Parker′s final chapter puts the finishing touches on what is a most valuable text for practitioners new and old to be able revisit to why they may have entered the profession. -- Mr Robert Bielby * drupal *
Appropriate for learners to read before progressing into employment across the sector -- Mrs Janice Grinstead * drupal *
However, passed to a colleague for consideration on the practice realities module in year three, which considers professional issued alongside the students final practice placement. -- Mrs Kay Wall * drupal *
An easy read. Perhaps more useful at BA level than MA but recommend at our Induction stage as an introductory text. -- Mrs Kerry Fidler * drupal *
This book provides a useful overview of the expectations of professional social work today. It is perhaps most appropraite for social work students or anyone contemplating a career in professional social work. -- Mrs Mary Macdonald * drupal *
This book helps because a casts a vision of what a student social worker is aiming for post qualification and especially in their ASYE year. It also helps when training professionals to become practice educators. It gives a clearer picture of social work as a profession to be proud of. -- Mrs Patricia Woolley * drupal *
A very good book which will serve students well as undergraduates and beyond. -- Mrs Ruth Mawdsley * drupal *
Highlights some of the key themes and areas in relation to social work -- Mrs Tracey McVeigh * drupal *
