Assessment is central to teaching and learning, yet is one of the most difficult areas of professional practice. This book guides trainee secondary teachers through its complexities and provides practical strategies, exemplified by case studies. It examines issues such as diagnosing problems, sharing learning objectives, assessment as a tool for motivation, effective planning, using evidence to adapt teaching, peer and self assessment, learning through dialogue and understanding formative assessment. Targeted specifically at trainees, this text links explicitly to the new QTS Standards, and its tasks provide opportunities for reflection and for practising the range of skills involved in assessing pupils.
"The book covered, quite simply, all of the facts of assessments that trainee teachers need to know"- Senior Lecturer, Kingston University
A very useful book to give greater depth of understanding to support the learning experiences about assessment in both University and school based training. It links well to theory and innovative use of technology and gives clear rationale and examples to aid the students in developing their use of AfL. -- Alison Chapman * drupal *
I like the references to the QTS standards (although of course they′re changing next year). Overall the structure of the book and its chapters was very good. I′d have liked to see some reference to Black and Williams′ (2009) work on ′Developing the theory of formative assessment′ but I appreciate their book was written in 2008 (see educ. Asses. Eval. Acc (2009) p.8) -- Dr David Cooper * drupal *
This text was part of the essential reading list I gave for a first year module called Curriculum Design on a BSc Education programme. As part of that module students consider issues around designing an appropriate curriculum and hence consideration of assessments is one key area. This text is written in a very student friendly way and hence was very good as a text for this particular module and level of students. -- Dr Julie Price * drupal *
I like the case studies and practical tasks. Very useful to me as an ITT trainer. Specific detail involving assessment therefore valuable for that area. Obviously not so useful for all the other areas. Well written. -- Lorna Eales * drupal *
Fantastic read for assessment, very similar read to other QTS. -- Miss Catherine Flint * drupal *
Good addition for PGCE students to refer to as there is great confusion around AfL for students and how they can make it part of their teaching rather than an afterthought. -- Miss Lorraine Smith * drupal *
Relevant to QTS.
Provides a secure understanding of issues of assessment in schools.
Assists in using theory and research in setting effective, measurable and achievable learning outcomes. -- Mr Andy Stopher * drupal *
Extremely readable and instructive book which uses the sort of language which is intelligible to trainees just beginning on their journey to a career in teaching. -- Mr Bill Ash * drupal *
Excellent summary of AfL for secondary trainees -- Mr Robert Hooson * drupal *
