This is an accessible and comprehensive introductory textbook for students on sport studies courses. It brings together perspectives drawn from a range of disciplines, especially sociology, history and philosophy, with detailed information on the key political, legal, economic and vocational issues relating to sport.

Written specifically for students based in the UK, the text examines the full range of topics relevant to sport studies and is fully supported with learning activities, suggestions for further study, and guidance on how to progress and succeed in the subj

Here, the author admirably, creatively, and generously shares her knowledge and tips... Exemplary, also, are the discussions about how to link knowledge in sport to a kind of employability. This discussion is motivated by thoughts that most students ponder concerning how to get a job in their field of study. -- Owe Stråhlman
As with other sports-related texts I have reviewed from the Learning Matters collection, this book is certainly very useful for 1st year undergraduates, providing a basic introduction to the study of sport from a social science perspective. Certainly recommended as optional reading throughout year 2, although will not be as useful for final year students, who need more specialised research material.
NB - programme on which this book is used is BA (Hons) Physical Education and Sport. -- Dr Alexander Channon * drupal *
As the text is divided usefully into sections this helps the reader cover the range of key issues related to the study of sport. -- Dr Andrew Balsdon * drupal *
This book supports our year undergraduate students. The case studies and links with UK programmes provides relevant information to discuss and investigate. Easily accessible text. -- Emerick Kaitell * drupal *
A suitable read for level 3 students with great discussion topics that can be developed for future lesson plans or informal classroom discussions.

Information can be crossed reference for a range of BTEC units and students have refered to sections of the book, particularly the range of case studies that provide great examples for students to understand the theoretical information.

A popular book in research activities. -- Miss Gemma Hallett * drupal *
The book offers a good, broad and general introduction to elements of the subject area. However, the book lacks depth in specific subdisciplinary areas to provide mroe than introductory reading in my area of teaching. -- Mr Adam Evans * drupal *
A very good text containing excellent detail over a variety of social concepts. Particular areas highly related to my students work are the impact of media on sports participation in certain groups including women, ethnic minorities and social class. There are lots of issues highlighted for debate and discussion on ethics, fairplay and its relevence in modern day sport and the Paralympics debate on integration and segregation of athletes. This text highlights many social issues affecting sport globally and in the UK and offers students routes and segways in which to take their own independent studies and ideas. There is also a very useful section about personal study, advice on study projects, types of assessments students can undertake, action planning and producing PDP′s. -- Mr James Morris * drupal *
Very good book to read as an introduction to the underpinning of sports science. Part 2 is an interesting read around the political and economic aspects of sport policy and structure. Part 3 is excellent for those still unsure of how to use their new skills and qualification -- Mr Phil Waring * drupal *
A good introduction to the multidisciplinary field of sports studies. -- Mrs Alison Cain * drupal *
A comprehensive useful and informative practical book that draws from a range of disciplines. In particular, the learning activities provides some useful group and reflective discussions. -- Ms Heather Allison * drupal *
