Social Work, Social Policy and Older People cover

It is essential for social work students to know about social policy, to know why studying social policy is important in the social work degree, and to understand how social policy, when implemented, has a real impact on the everyday life of vulnerable people. This book provides plenty of examples of this impact, tracing the development of welfare provision for older people right through the twentieth century, leading up to an analysis of contemporary developments, which students will need to know about in order to practice effectively.

Fantastic book as it deals effectively with three huge topics that are inextricably linked to be relevant to both practitioners and academics.
The linkage of policy with ideology throughout is good. -- Clive Sealey * drupal *
An excellent overview of social policy and social work in relation to policies and services for older people. -- Dr Harriet Churchill * drupal *
A lucid and accessible text which covers substantive issues relating to working with older people. The reading lists and critical thinking exercises are particularly useful. A more sustained discussion of sexuality and older people would have been welcomed. -- Dr Megan Todd * drupal *
Eaasy to read, up to date text, that thoroughly examines the links between current social work practices and histiorical social policies.

I particularly liked the critical thinking exercises. -- Gavin Millar * drupal *
Quite thorough, would have liked to have seen more on older people and personalisation and direct payments (pages 119-120 useful). -- Jackie Heslin * drupal *
This is an invaluable resource to all social work students.I will be using it as a recommended text on our new MA Social Work programme. One area for future development is to explore policy divergence post devolution. -- Mr John Malcolm * drupal *
With an ageing demographic this will form key recommended reading as part of the social policy module-thisis an esily acessible text, that addresses key issues in social policy and the relationship between key policy decisions and socil work practice- a fast moving subject area- thanks -- Mrs Andrea Bailey * drupal *
Good overview of developments and consideration of some difficult ideas working with older people. Some of the critical excercises will make students think. -- Mrs Jackie Lelkes * drupal *
I like the way in which the book took an historical approach to the development of policy for older people. The book does not, however, focus enough on the role of the social work and the skills required to work with older people across a range of disciplines. The book does not acknowledge the need to develop social policy in the light of an growing population of older people with learning disabilities. -- Mrs Patricia Woolley * drupal *
I′m not module leader for this, but it will be good underpinning knowledge for the modules I lead - Preparation for Practice and Values and Ethics - and I′ll recommend it to the Module Leader for Social Policy. -- Ms Elizabeth Lefroy * drupal *
As there are so many changes within the field of social policy this book is very welcome. It was interesting to note the authors focused on social policy and older people as often children′s services are more focused upon. I think that books that contain chapter contributions from more than one author can be advantantageous as each writer contributes from their specialist topic.
Good start for students exploring the complexities of social policy. -- Ms Michelle Evans * drupal *
I liked the use of case studies to explore issues of social policy (E.g. Ch. 1). I am not sure about relating the chapters to the benchmarks - whilst I can see students finding it helpful it could also lead to shortcuts? -- Ms Sally Scott * drupal *
Useful background text for students on placement in older people′s settings -- Philip Gilligan * drupal *
It is increasingly important for social workers to ensure they have good practice skills in working with older people. This book helps to achieve this! -- Professor Alisoun Milne * drupal *
