This is an excellent introduction to the complexity of contemporary nursing practice. It is a particularly useful resource for first year students of nursing but students at all levels will find individual chapters helpful. This was a much improved text compared to the first edition (different title). It is more balanced and up-to-date. It contains useful information that provides a sound foundation for understanding policy and its implementation, e.g. evidence-based practice, quality in healthcare. As always it is difficult for any text to keep abreast of current changes to the structure of health services, but I think a little more information and analytical discussion would improve the text, especially around the issue of the health and social care interface. -- Jane Merritt * drupal *

This book grounds the inception of health care and its evolution and transition to the complex system it is in contemporary nursing practice.By identifiying clearly at the start of each chapter how the subject meets the NMC standards for Pre registration and essential skills clusters, students are able to conceptualise and see the relevance in their role.
The book explores the students role, service users, cultutre and traditions in nursing, that students will find useful in their role and transtion to qualified practitioners.
