What does working in partnership look like in practice?
Getting multi-agency working right is an exciting but challenging goal in early years care and education; this book suggests ways to draw together the different professional ideas, methods and targets.
Enhancing the delivery of services to children, parents and communities is essential if we are to address the detrimental effects of poverty and exclusion. Looking at the Birth to 8 age range and drawing on interviews with Children′s Centre leaders, the book considers:
- the benefits, and complexities, of multi-agency working;
- what enables, and impedes, good practice;
- examples of successful multi-agency working;
- what the ′new professionals′ look like;
- international perspectives.
Suitable for all pre-school and early years practitioners working in, or organizing, multi-agency practice at any level, this book is relevant to all those working in Children′s Services and useful for anyone studying early childhood or multi-agency working in practice.
Michael Gasper is an educational consultant and researcher. He has over 30 years of experience in early years education and research, including roles as a mentor, assessor and tutor on the National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership (NPQICL).
′We are living through an historic time of change in the delivery of children′s and family services in England. At the heart of this change is a cultural and professional shift towards multi-agency working which encourages all professionals to work in partnership and integrate their services around the needs of the child and the family. The challenges of this new way of working are enormous and this timely, informed and extremely accessible book will support all lead professionals in developing the effectiveness of their multi-agency working. It will also challenge their thinking and understanding about how a multi-agency approach might deliver enhanced outcomes for every child and family. This book will be an invaluable support for all those concerned to make multi-agency working work!′ - Professor Christine Pascal, Director of the Centre for Research in Early Childhood and President of the European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA)
′Focusing on the birth to eight-years-old age range, the book considers what enables and impedes good practice, and provides a good number of examples of multi-agency working, leadership and management in action′ - Early Years Educator

This book provides a welcome and thorough exploration of the development, benefits and challenges of multi-agency working in the context of Early Years. I found the references to partnership working in other countries to be particularly interesting in the way they draw out how some aspects of partnership working are universal. Each section contains ′Points for reflection′ - a welcome reminder of an essential part of the process for all of us, and an opportunity to pause and apply what we′ve just read to our own practice. By exploring why partnership working matters so much (especially why it matters to communities, families and children) the book draws out some of the key opportunities we can sometimes be too busy to see when we are dealing with frequent shifts in agenda and constant change. -- Ms Angela Hilton * drupal *
