The SAGE Handbook of Grounded Theory cover

Grounded Theory is by far the most widely used research method across a wide range of disciplines and subject areas, including social sciences, nursing and healthcare, medical sociology, information systems, psychology, and anthropology. This handbook gives a comprehensive overview of the theory and practice of Grounded Theory, taking into account the many attempts to revise and refine Glaser and Strauss′ original formulation and the debates that have followed.

Antony Bryant & Kathy Charmaz bring together leading researchers and practitioners of the method from the US, the UK, Australia and Europe to represent all the major standpoints within Grounded Theory, demonstrating the richness of the approach. The contributions cover a wide range of perspectives on the method, covering its features and ramifications, its intricacies in use, its demands on the skills and capabilities of the researcher and its position in the domain of research methods.

The SAGE Handbook of Grounded Theory is an indispensable reference source for academics and researchers across many disciplines who want to develop their understanding of the Grounded Theory method.

Tony Bryant and Kathy Charmaz are the perfect editors for this excellent and forward looking Handbook which is surely destined to be a classic

For anyone interested in grounded theory this is a must have book. No longer will students have to search the library or internet to find authoritative voices on a variety of topics. It’s all right there at their fingertips

In my experience of supervising and examining masters and doctoral

students in the social sciences over three decades, a very large proportion

of them use or claim to use grounded theory in some form or other. It

appears to be the stock method of social science research and accepted

without question by most university teachers and authorities (let alone

students) in this field....This Handbook, at over 600 pages long, with 27 chapters (in addition to the chapter length Introduction) by more than 30 contributors, offers a vast amount of

material upon which to consider some fundamental issues...There is a very

useful ‘Discursive Glossary of Terms’ and (what a gem!) a thorough and detailed index

The Sage Handbook of Grounded Theory constitutes a fascinating col-lection, and the containment of each chapter makes it very amenable to ‘occasional dips’...as a cornucopia of ideas in to the world of grounded theory (which is, apparently, the most frequently-cited analytical approach in qualitative research publications), this volume is unsurpassed

One of my PhD students and one of the exchange students used Graounded theory for their research work and found this book very useful. Particularly with regard to identifying open and axial coding. They all used QSR NVivo for coding the data. -- Dr Champika Liyanage * drupal *
This is an excellent text comprehensively taking the reader through the process of doing grounded theory. Superb for doctorate students and anyone contemplating using GT for their research project. -- Dr Charlotte Ramage * drupal *
I am adopting this as a recommended resource for my Qualitative II course. Many students in the course are interested in grounded theory and for those students, I have recommended that they purchase this book and submit a reading response on a selection of chapters. I think the book is excellent and provides multiple perspectives. -- Dr Chris Suurtamm * drupal *
This book is being adopted as an excellent specific source text on those dissertation learners focusing their methodology on Grounded Theory.

Grounded Theory is increasing among doctoral dissertation learners as a preferred method for their study. This "Handbook" provides, in detail, the needed fundamentals required to successfully write a proposal and subsequent dissertation. -- Dr Dale Crowe * drupal *
Excellent text - covering a key range of issues. -- Dr Daniel Bloyce * drupal *
this book is excellent for grounded theory in both sides practical and theoretical -- Dr George Kodsy * drupal *
The book is good but requires selective readers. -- Dr Hong Bui * drupal *
I used this book last year for my methods class for master′s students. It was a bit too advanced for many of my students so I am going to use a less advanced text next time. -- Dr Jackson Wilson * drupal *
A comprehensive introduction to contemporary grounded theory. Very good. -- Dr Liz Ballinger * drupal *
This is a very detailed, thought-provoking range of essays on grounded theory. It has a wide scope and demonstrates an understanding of the historical roots of grounded theory and its modern applications. -- Dr Liz Coldridge * drupal *
A wide and comprehensive coverage of the most widely used approach to qualitative analysis. The book provides a good link between theory and practice whilst covering a wide variety of perspectives. This book is an important resource for those researchers who wish to use and understand the Grounded theory. -- Dr Mansour Pourmehdi * drupal *
Provides a very broad overview of discussions in the field of Grounded Theory. The book contains something about every related aspect. I have adopted a few texts in different courses I teach on qualitative research methods. -- Dr Masja Van Meeteren * drupal *
This book brings together many contemporary researchers who are experienced in using grounded theory. For someone new to grounded theory, it introduces key issues and debates, although it is probably more easily accessible to those who have already used grounded theory. -- Dr Max Hope * drupal *
A great resource for all MSc and doctoral level students engaged in Grounded Theory research. The book is accessible to all levels, but perhaps more as a reference tool and not a working tool, due to its size and portability. -- Dr Miguel Montenegro * drupal *
Useful book for pondering over grounded theory. Supplemental but advised for thos who want to strenthen their knowledge of and skills in this area. -- Dr Roy Gigengack * drupal *
An excellent resource for students who decide to work with any qualitative method. -- Dr Sara Macdonald * drupal *
The Handbook of Grounded Theory is very thorough and provides a comprehensive and broad overview by many of the leading proponents. Theoretical variations of different authors are covered in depth, and it also addresses the practical side and grapples with how to implement the various coding strategies and memoing etc. It will certainly be of use at Masters, Doctoral and for lecturers also, in conjuction with the practical guide. -- Dr Sharon Morley * drupal *
A must read for all students and academics that consider using grounded theory in their research projects. -- Dr Xavier Matteucci * drupal *
A comprehensive collection of texts for courses that focus on advanced Grounded Theory methodology. -- Mr Clemens Wieser * drupal *
Due to this being quite a specific research approach it is only recommended. However the major application, and variations in GT are covered well -- Mr Dale Forsdyke * drupal *
This book is excellent as a reference for students who wish to undertake Grounded Theory as a methodology for their research projects. -- Mr Douglas Newman-Valentine * drupal *
An excellent book which addresses very well many of the current debates surrounding Grounded Theory.

The book is informative and well written - students undertaking Grounded Theory studies will find this text helps to demystify many areas related to Grounded Theory. -- Mr John Sedgewick * drupal *
This text is comprehensive in scope, gathering together the perspectives of many contemporary proponents of GT methodology. However, some esoteric elements are present, and for the novice GT researcher, it would need to be read in conjunction with an introductory text. -- Mr Mark Davies * drupal *
This is an incredibly comprehensive book on Grounded Theory, which benefits from numerous prolific contributors. Some sections are more anecdotal, others descriptive, some focus on new theoretical insights. Not all chapters will suit every reader. However, one is inclined to think that nobody who is interested in Grounded Theory will be disappointed with this book. -- Mr Matthias Hillner * drupal *
Besides the original readings by Anselm Strauss and Barney Glaser, this is the most comprehensive in-depth work on Grounded Theory.
