This is the ideal textbook for any course in statistical methods across the health and social sciences and a perfect starter book for students, researchers and professionals alike.

George Argyrous’ book is an invaluable resource to students taking introductory methods courses where SPSS is used, and I had much success and positive feedback when I included it on the syllabi of my quantitative methods and political analysis courses. It is a strong text for instructors who need an engaging textbook that covers the topics that constitute the core elements of undergraduate and postgraduate quantitative methods courses in the social sciences. A particular strength of this book is that it combines readable text on the basics of research design and quantitative methods with clear instructions on how to implement the material using the SPSS software program
Thomas J. Scotto, Lecturer, Department of Government, University of Essex

Statistics for Research: with a Guide to SPSS explains how to use some of the most common statistical tests using example relevant to the types of analyses undertaken by a wide range of social science researchers. The accompanying explanations of how to both undertake the tests using SPSS, and report the results appropriately, make the guide a comprehensive and ideal companion for researchers particularly those who are new to, or use quantitative methods infrequently

The book is an excellent general statistics text, with the key advantage of using SPSS to illustrate the concepts. The book would be a good text for undergraduate students on a range of social science courses or postgraduate students taking Foundation Research Methods

Steve Strand
University of Warwick, British Journal of Educational Psychology

This is a book that I wish I′d had on two occasions in my life; the first when I started statistics as a psychology undergraduate and the second, many years later, when I embarked upon a research degree in councelling and psychology. The author provides a logical introduction to applied statistics and research methodology, clearly and carefully linking the two. After demonstrating each relevant statistical technique ′by hand′, using well-chosen examples from both the health and the social sciences, he then demonstrates how it can be carried out using SPSS... The book is accompanied by a companion website which provides valuable additional material both for the student and the lecturer. I can thoroughly recommend this book.

The book is useful in many ways, however, it is quite similar to other texts that are better structured (for example, Burns and Burns).

This text is well written and well presented, students will find this useful. -- Dr Heidi Cheung * drupal *
Nice introductary SPSS-textbook, which even has a small section about power. Nevertheless I felt that it did not really stand out in the crowd of intro-stats textbooks. -- Dr Johan Braeken * drupal *
useful for project students -- Dr Judith Kuit * drupal *
This book offers a level of explanation on a par with Field′s ′Discovering Statistics with SPSS′ but is much more to the point with fewer tangents. The explanations are excellent and it doesn′t shy away from using equations, thus it is a book to be recommended to the more confident students. -- Dr Luke Sloan * drupal *
A very useful book which includes good examples for my lessons. Texts and cases are to understand for my students. -- Dr Marusya Smokova * drupal *
A good introductory book! -- Dr Olatunde Aremu * drupal *
the book offers a a good introduction to the basic concepts and techniqhes of statistics. Very useful for students of health and social care sciences -- Dr Praxoulla Rameshwar * drupal *

Statistics for Research has been adopted as a supplemental book for both undergraduates and postgraduates in management related disciplines, especially covering research methods into socio-economic issues.

-- Dr Thomas Jeyendran * drupal *
I found the book is very handy for student who want to use SPSS, while it also provides enough depth for understanding the reasons behind the analysis.
I recommend this book to my student and to everyone who have a plan to use SPSS, especially who have limited knowledge or have leaving class for very long time.
I have no other words, than appreciate the writer and recommend student to read it. -- Dr Tri Joewono * drupal *
Not sociological enough -- Ed Collom * drupal *
The first five chapters of this book are particularly helpful because they cover areas that many books ignore but which are central to undergraduates getting started with SPSS, e.g. data entry, frequency tables, charts. I will recommend these chapter to my undergraduates; they are very helpfully presented. I will also recommend the book to my postgraduate students because the section on inferential statistics is comprehensive and includes helpful advice as to how to use statistical tests in SPSS. -- Jamie Harding * drupal *
A very clear and helpful guide to statistics -- Miss Jannine Van de Maat * drupal *
The book covers most statistical concepts for beginners well. The examples and illustrations are good an easy to follow. However, it would a good self teaching tool if it had a a copy of the book as a CD +worked examples in CD as well for class illustration purposes. -- Mr Albert Chuma * drupal *
good book for anyone novice with statistics
-- Mr Ali Mohammed * drupal *
Well written supplement to help studets gain understanding to using SPSS with other statistical methods. -- Mr Charles Kramer * drupal *
this book can be useful if you are using SPSS within your primary research -- Mr Christopher Aitkins * drupal *
Excellent textbook for our module. We teach introductory-level statistics using SPSS. This book has clear instructions on how to use SPSS and an excellent explanation of the underpinning statistical material. -- Mr Martin Leach * drupal *
Some students avoid statistics and, indeed quantitative method and methodologies. The course actively seeks out books that can help to demystify this area for students. This book is useful as a reference source for students struggling to grasp statistics. Though SPSS is not actively tought, students moving on to higher studies have a useful reference point to return to if and when statistics are involved. -- Mr Peter Thompson * drupal *
This is a good book covering a wide range of subject matter but I have not adopted it for two reasons: it extends a long way beyond the introductory course syllabus (also because of the use of algebra which is very unpopular with students encountering statistics in a Master′s degree for the first time), and it does not have as many of the SPSS screen prints which I found such a positive feature of Louise Marston′s book. -- Mr Robert Grant * drupal *
There are a numher of points that I want to make about this book. First of all its quite updated and used SPSS 19 which is the latest version. Secondly, the book is quite easy to understand even for people without a background in maths or stats. Thirdly, the book provids illustrated examples explaining stastistical procedures and at the same time show you how to do it on SPSS. I would recommend this book for undergraduate and postgraduate students. -- Mr Shakil Ghori * drupal *
The book provides useful and illustrative review of the common techniques in quantitative methods, including for example, statistical tests at bivarata and multivariate analysis, with exercises related to real research cases.
However, I believe this book can be a bit advanced for undergraduate student taken the course "Methods in Epidemiological Research, 7.5 hp).
For master′s students conducting their thesis, the book is highly recommended -- Mr Stefan Backe * drupal *
Breaks down concepts into easy learnable pieces -- Mr Vivek Venugopal * drupal *
A useful resource to students taking introductory research methods, and undergraduate student using SPSS.
The text is easy to read, covering basic research design and quantitative methodologies, with guidance on how to use SPSS to undertake various statistical tests.

this book is very clear and easy to read, applicable to anyone doing quantitative research -- Ms Pat Clarke * drupal *
An excellent text for inferential statistical tests of 1, 2 or 3+ samples, including different levels of measurement. The layout and explanation are straightforward for students to follow. -- Professor Andrew Thompson * drupal *
This book provide practical examples using SPSS. Statistical concepts are explained using SPSS as a companion to introduce and explain the concepts. Pre-knowledge of SPSS is required. -- Professor Carl Marnewick * drupal *

Examples are extremely helpful and the right level of maths is provided for this student group. -- Professor Matthias Schwannauer * drupal *
Top on my list to consider using the textbook in the future. I like the extensive explanations for the crosstabs and the test statistics.
