Most classrooms contain children from a variety of backgrounds, where home culture, religious beliefs and the family′s economic situation all impact on achievement. This needs to be recognised by teachers in order to establish fair, respectful, trusting and constructive relationships with children and their families, which will allow every child to reach their full potential.
This book looks at real issues that affect teachers in the classroom, and examines a variety of influences affecting child development. It provides you with the theoretical and practical information you need to ensure you understand the complex factors which affect the children in your care, and it encourages good, thoughtful teaching. Dealing with some of the less widely addressed aspects of diversity and inclusion, the book considers:
- children who are asylum seekers
- the notion of ′pupil voice′
- what diversity and equality mean in practice
- gender and achievement
- looked-after children
- social class
- disability
- ethnicity and whiteness
This book is essential reading for any education student looking at diversity and inclusion, and for teachers in role looking for advice on how to meet the professional standards.
This book is very useful for new/experienced teachers and teacher trainers, as well as sociologists and psychologists of education, who are keen to know more about key connections between identity, diversity, equality and achievement, increase their knowledge and understanding of child development, and interrogate their own personal positionality regarding ethnicities, cultures and religions. -- Sadia Habib
The book deals with key and contemporary issues on learner diversity and inclusive practice. It provides useful insights into the ways in which socio-cultural factors impact upon students′ achievement and developmental trajectories. There are useful links with current education policy and practice for reflection and critical analysis. -- Dr Anastasia Liasidou * drupal *
A generally excellent book which hits our course learning outcomes on our Level 5 Equality, Diversity and Inclusion module within the Foundation Degree in Learning Support .
Its style is very accessible and the activities are useful.
One small problem. The diagram of Brofennbrenner′s ecological system (Chapter 3) has the outer to concentric circles in the wrong order: an issue that I have had to warn my students about.
Other than that, a very useful textbook -- Dr Dominic Griffiths * drupal *
Excellent text - covers lots of very important aspects of equality and diversity. Good introductory, yet comprehensive text. -- Dr Kate D'Arcy * drupal *
This is a very thoughtful title which is suitable for anyone in the educational field to discuss in context. There are particular chapters relevant to the structure of our academic offer and as such it was decided to make it a supplmental resource. -- Dr Mario Moya * drupal *
It is an accessible introductory text on equity and education. It deals with a range of topics including disability, class, gender and refugees with plenty of illuminating case studies. The text will help students build foundational knowledge and understanding around the subject areas. -- Dr Miyoung Oh * drupal *
Excellent textbook for this course. It does almost everything I would want it to do, with three exceptions - there′s nothing on sexuality/LGBT issues, not as much as I would have liked on religion, and where policy is referred to it is usually England with little reference to the other countries of the UK. That said, it plugged a definite gap between very introductory and general texts, and academic journal articles. I particularly like the chapter on social class, and have seen a definite improvement in students′ engagement with social class issues. -- Dr Shereen Benjamin * drupal *
I love this book! Every single chapter is so relevant for our students on the two modules about inclusion matters, an inclusive society and diversity. The case studies, activities and questions for discussion will enhance our current studies. It is very readable and very interesting and I can′t wait to being using it.
(Incorrect information above: course ends in June 2013) -- Judith Lewis * drupal *
Ideal publication for those undertaking the Certificate in Education and Training. Especially suited to the Equality units. -- Miss Antoinette Unsworth * drupal *
I have just added this text to my reading list. The authors eloquently capture the essence of this important issue. They explain the importance of understanding equality and diversity as a moral obligation and not just legal. This will be a great help for all students studying ′Equal Opportunities′ in early years, and for any practitioner working with children, their families and colleagues where various opinions, beliefs and stereotypes abound. this book encourages deep reflection and questioning of own self as well as challenging discrimination from others. -- Miss Jo Button * drupal *

This is an excellent text for education students and beginning teachers. The reader-friendly layout includes some useful case studies and pertinent questions for discussion. In addition to further reading, the end of each chapter also directs the reader to ′useful websites′ for further information. See previous feedback -- Mr Jonathan Reid * drupal *
This interesting and engaging text will provide the undergraduate student with useful overviews of issues relating to diversity and equality in Educational settings.
Although each chapter can be read individually to gain an understanding of specific aspects of diversity, read as a whole the reader will develop a more comprehensive understanding of inclusive and exclusionary educational practices.
The case study examples are particularly interesting and help contexualise key themes with real life examples.
Questions for discussion and suggestions of further reading increase reader engagement and interest. -- Mr Jonathan Reid * drupal *
