An accessible and up to date introduction to the key theme of policing and young people. This text gives a comprehensive overview of the issues involved in working with young people as offenders, suspects, witnesses, victims and citizens. It looks at perceptions of the young, and the role of the media in the context of current debates around anti-social behaviour, gangs and the family. The impact of multi-agency approaches on the way that young people are dealt with by the police and other agencies is considered, and additional chapters discuss police discretion and ethics, and safeguarding vulnerable young people.
The clarity of the information is great: it is very easy for students to follow. One negative is that it does not give a very extensive view on the subject. It could have included more depth as this would then make it useful as a key text for the students rather than an introductory resource. -- Catrina Langan * drupal *
It is easy to read. Great case studies with the book. Good tasks too. -- Charlie Wolfe * drupal *
There are relatively few texts in this area which are written in an accessible manner- this book is pitched just right for students who need a basic informative introduction. -- Dr Caroline Humphrey * drupal *
This book nicely covers the range of relationships between young people and police. It appropriately offers a range of perspectives on the issues raised, linking theory and practice. -- Dr Douglas McCarrick * drupal *
A good introduction to key issues in policing young people. I found the discussion points and group tasks particularly useful for seminars. -- Dr Faye Cosgrove * drupal *
A bit basic. -- Dr Leonie Howe * drupal *
A well structured and easy to read book. The book acknowledges that young people can be victims as well as offenders, a fact which is often overlooked or ignored in contemporary society. The various ′reflective′ and ′practical′ tasks help to develop an understanding of the text. A very useful addition to an excellent series of books. -- Dr Mark Hawes * drupal *
This book is at an introductory level and would be good for my students as a starting point on the topic. However, I would be expecting them to read more primary sources and so go beyond this one. -- Dr Megan O'Neill * drupal *
As an introductory study to the broad subject of young people and policing the text will provide students with a good foundation to develop during their studies. -- Dr Peter Hall * drupal *
Some useful information and it will be useful. Not academic enough for study at higher level. Very practitioner-based. -- Dr Richard Peake * drupal *
A text that specifically addresses issues of policing youths - a previously neglected area. -- Jane Pickford * drupal *
An easy to read, well laid out book, which looks at the often stereotypical view of young people and the issues surrounding working with them. -- Miss Frances Jackson * drupal *
An excellent text for introducing students′ to key concepts and perceptions relating to young people, their relationship to policing and the multi-agency responses to their behaviour (offending or otherwise) -- Miss Sue Uttley-Evans * drupal *
A topical subject which acknowledges that young people can be victims as well as offenders thereby opening up the topic to debate. ′Policing Matters′ is an excellent series presenting modern theories in an easy to read and understandable format for students embarking on policing studies. -- Mr Alastair Loadman * drupal *
A series that would be useful for Level 3 or, at best, level 4 as it provides a foundation for study at degree level. -- Mr Ashley Tiffen * drupal *
Adoption of book is dependent on a new round of police recruiting and a commitment by police forces to embark on or continue with foundation degree programmes. New programmes are currently being discussed/developed to provide HE developmental opportunities for those interested in joining the police service.
The book is well written and covers a wide range of issues relating to policing and young people. It is very pertinent to modern day policing and provides the student with an excellent start in understanding how the criminal justice system interacts and deals with young people as victims, witnesses, and suspects. It provides a sound platform for any student wishing to specialise in or conduct further study/research in this key area of policing. -- Mr Barrie Sheldon * drupal *
This book looks at perceptions of young people, and the role of the media in the context of current debates around anti-social behaviour, gangs and the family. The impact of multi-agency approaches on the way that young people are dealt with by the police and other agencies is considered. -- Mr Bernard Sheridan * drupal *
Comprehensive and informative -- Mr Gerwyn Henderson * drupal *
Contemporary- well written and clear and concise. Could be used as campus-based or distance learning material. -- Mr Graham Brooks * drupal *
A very well written book which will be very valuable to undergraduate social science students. I particularly welcome the chapters on perceptions of YP and on antisocial behaviour. Greater emphasis on y.degrees agents could have been included (U.N Comoalus) -- Mr John Malcolm * drupal *
A helpful reference point -- Mr Maurice Collins * drupal *
Some very useful chapters for use as debate starters and thought-provokers on the relationship between poor youths and children and police in a mass, urban, industrial consumer society.
Particularly liked the chapter on children as victims and offenders. -- Mr Patrick Meehan * drupal *
Reflective tasks provide students with opportunity to take learning to next level, however, at times some of the discussions may benefit from a more critical view. -- Mr Stuart Agnew * drupal *
Like- layout, writing style, case studies, reflective tasks, chapters on interviewing young people (ABE and special measures). Dislike- use of weblinks-they sometimes expire. -- Mr Walter Green * drupal *
Useful chapters which will apply to a few modules taken by students on the above course. -- Mrs Nicola Meek * drupal *
It is very user-friendly for undergraduates, being broken into bite-sized chunks which are accompanied by issues for students to consider, encouraging them to think about the issues-clearly this topic may come to the fore in the light of recent events! -- Ms Helen Poole * drupal *
