Test Yourself: Research Methods and Design in Psychology provides essential learning and practice through assessment for psychology students. It enables year 1 and 2 undergraduates to assess their confidence and competence and tackle the types of questions they will face in their formal university assessments.
The book includes over 200 multiple-choice and extended multiple-choice questions, designed to assess depth of knowledge. At the end of each chapter sample essay questions are provided, plus further guidance, to complement the multiple-choice questions and further test understanding. Information is provided to help students make sense of their results and identify strengths and weaknesses.
Also may be useful for international students on a separate MSc course. Relevant to our own methods and examining research methods that I teach. I didn′t find the flow charts particularly useful, but I do agree that making links across chapters is a good idea. -- Alice Jones * drupal *
Learning through assessment is a great concept. I will be using this text and recommending it to studens on the Introduction to Research Methods Module. -- Dr Alan Yates * drupal *
This is a good book, but I don’t think that I will be adding it to my required reading list. I would rather my students read something more comprehensive. -- Dr Andrew Mayers * drupal *
This book reflects a very poor understanding of and perspective on research methods and design - the whole School of Psychology here at Keele was surprised by the low quality and misapprehensions apparent in this text. -- Dr Andrew Rutherford * drupal *
A very good textbook to support undergraduate psychology students who might be nervous about learning new concepts. This textbook is reader friendly and covers almost all undergraduate students need to know regarding research methods. -- Dr Anne Manyande * drupal *
Good self assessment materials -- Dr Chris Bale * drupal *
Brilliant little book with plenty of ideas for MCQs for year 1 undergraduate psychology students to work through. Highly recommended. -- Dr Faisal Mushtaq * drupal *
To be honest I had a quick look at the book and thought that if it were linked to a specific textbook it would be a nice resource, because it could reinforce the material covered in the lectures. Without this I do not see how I could use it – it does not match the material we cover very well and the ‘answers’ provided do not always match with what we tell the students. SO – I am afraid – I won’t be recommending it. -- Dr Georg Meyer * drupal *
Unfortunately I didn′t find the book very helpful and therefore have not recommended it to students (I thought it was rather simplistic and also I didn′t always agree with the suggested answers). -- Dr Hartmut Blank * drupal *
This is a useful student resource for ongoing self-assessment in relation to research design. -- Dr Helen Stivaros * drupal *
I like the concept maps for essays. This is how I advise students to plan essays and exam answers. Quantitative research is allocated too little attention. Good to see h=1, especially multiple baseline in a book for this level. -- Dr Juliet Goldbart * drupal *
The topics covered are extensive and the questions asked are of appropriate difficulty. However, our departmental policy for assessment is that students write up lab reports and answer essay questions; multiple choice is not typically part of the curriculum. As such, this material would not be particularly helpful for our students. -- Dr Larry Taylor * drupal *
Although I found this book interesting my main focus is on teaching qualitative research methods and design. I felt that the chapter on this did not go sufficiently into depth for students above the 1st year of Undergraduate teaching. Also that there was scope for more focus on inquiry into the rationale for the use of qualitative approaches and methods. I do include this book on a general reading list but not as Essential reading. -- Dr Nollaig Frost * drupal *
Like- original, only test yourself book I have come across. Well designed, good price. Dislike- N/A. -- Dr Sarah Logan * drupal *
I have not adopted this book. I have mentioned it to my students as I think it is a very useful book for supporting students individual learning in their own time, but it has not been adopted as a text in its own right. -- Dr Victoria Lavis * drupal *
Overestimates value of multiple choice questions in intoduction. Some good critical and thought provoking questions- I wonder if this might work better as a teaching resource, than a textbook aimed at students? -- Helen Gregory * drupal *
Good revision material giving lots of very useful practice and in line, for the most part, with what we teach. -- Julia Robertson * drupal *
This book includes lots of useful multiple choice questions (MCQs), but I expected that the book would contain information to help students learn the issues, before being tested on them. There are lots of issues covered by the MCQs, but I think students would have a job finding the answers to some of these unless all issues were covered in their teaching. -- Kathryn Gardner * drupal *
While I would not recommend this to my students, as some questions, we would not cover in certain modules, it does provide a useful resource for me e.g. selectly relevant questions for quizzing them. -- Mrs Stella Williams * drupal *
A great little book which students can use to check their knowledge and understanding of what is often considered a challenging element of Psychology - I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone struggling with Research Methods -- Mrs Suzi Smale * drupal *
This was not adopted as it is a testing book and thus not essential reading, however it was helpful to design and thing about exam preparation questions with the students -- Ms Jo Cruywagen * drupal *
Useful for students to test themselves in advance of the exam -- Ms Pam Blundell * drupal *
