Already a tried-and-tested guide for trainee psychologists and psychotherapists, as well as clinicians in mental health services and private practices, this text is also of value to practitioners who need refresher courses in CBT.
"The size of this book hides its comprehensive coverage of CB theory/practice. It certainly holds your hand through the topic but at a level that is appropriate for the students. Whilst not a beginners’ guide, this text certainly covers all the basics and allows a student ‘to hit the ground running’. I recommend this book to all and it definitely will form the basis of my teaching." -
Tony Barlow, Birmingham City University
"This book is a state of the art text on the application of CBT to Mental Health Care. It will have lasting value for novice and trained CBT practitoners who wish to work with clients with psychological disorders. A gem of a book." -
Professor Windy Dryden
"Amongst the plethora of recent introduction to CBT books, there is nothing like this gem. The authors have produced a fresh, contemporary, wide-ranging synthesis which stretches the boundaries of CBT - is there any other CBT book which has sections on marginalised groups, discussion of values and alternative research methodologies?" -
James Bennett-Levy, University of Sydney and Southern Cross University
"Reflecting the burgeoning field of CBT this ambitious book sets CBT in its political and social context, as well as embracing new topics and populations. Remarkably, the breadth of the text does not compromise its accessibility - it is recommended to both those who are new to CBT and to the experienced." -
Amanda Cole, Consultant Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist
This book is both detailed and accessible, which is a hard balance to achieve. Part 1 is particularly useful in covering the essential elements of the therapeutic relationship, assessment and formulation. Later sections provide practical but well referenced information on working with specific disorders. One of the particular strengths of this book is that, unlike many CBT books, it stresses the importance of the therapeutic relationship, and the social and organisational context of the work. -- Dr Alison Rolfe * drupal *
This is a useful and interesting book but now only forms a small part of the topic for my module -- Dr Bonnie Meekums * drupal *
At just the right level and detail. -- Dr Brian Swallow * drupal *
Clear and accessible over-view of subject. A good all-round intro for students who need to know about this approach because of their NHS work -- Dr Christine Stevens * drupal *
Very detailed book with a good range of activities. -- Dr Claire Hart * drupal *
This is an excellent CBT book that effectively explores the application of CBT to various mental health disorders. You can tell it has been written by knowledgeable clinicians and as a consequence students will be able to connect with the material effectively. I would have no hesitation recommending it for the mental health and recovery module -- Dr Derek Farrell * drupal *
Excellent book covering up to date themes in CBT. Recommended to students as a good foundation offering breadth of knowledge on current research. -- Dr Elizabeth Dartnall * drupal *
Each chapter of the book was carefully structured enabling the reader to carefully follow each respective theme. Also, the use of case scenarios added an additional dimension to the skill acquisition of the student. The overall presentation of the book provided a comprehensive and detailed account of the theoretical perspectives associated with cognitive behavioural interventions as well as its value in relation to practice application. -- Dr John Adams * drupal *
Useful for students wishing to develop their knowledge and use of CBT in applied contexts (such as treatment of depression and so on), rather than generic skills. -- Dr Mark Widdowson * drupal *
This book is very important, wonderful text and easy written .I understood the scientific information in that book , however i will study the relationchip between the nutrition and mental health
finely,thanks you . -- Dr Mona El-kutry * drupal *
Excellent summary of CBT theory, practice and developments; the new edition has many improvements over the first edition although some good material has also been lost. -- Dr Neil MacFarlane * drupal *
This was a welcome addition to the body of literature on CBT; not least because it covers basic principles, details of how CBT works with different forms of mental distress, the evidence base for CBT and a range of practice issues.
My only criticism is that the I thought the final chapter on the evidence base and philosophical debates would have worked better as a series of challenges to the efficacy and legitimacy of CBT together with a series of rebuttals thereof. -- John Hopton * drupal *
This is an excellent solid foundation into key aspects of CBT for pre-registration mental health nursing students. It covers a good range of contemporary areas of clinical practice. Each chapter has clear learning objectives and recommended further reading, thus offering helpful structure for student studies. -- Mr Anthony Fraher * drupal *
A very useful summary -- Mr Chris Blackmore * drupal *
This is an excellent book. feedback has been delayed as my colleagues have also been looking at the book and considering it for their modules too. So far, tas a result of this, this book has now not only been placed on my recommended reading list for this module, but also as essential reading for a post-reg module and recommended reading for a further pre-registartion module (mental health nursing). Good overview. Focus on mental health. Well written. -- Mr Espen Braathen * drupal *
This book is not as is claimed on the back cover a novice read. The language used in a number of chapters could be simplified if this were the case e.g P10 "diologic repertoire" . The text is more appropriate for students with at least a basic working knowledge of CBT principles and as such is useful to extend their thinking around the subject. Students training specifically in CBT will find the book useful. Those who just want to grasp a basic understanding may flounder a little." -- Mr Frederick Ruddick * drupal *
